A bespoke commission is a collaboration built on trust, clarity, and craftsmanship. These terms lay out how we'll work together — what you can expect from us, and what we ask of you — so your commission stays smooth, fair, and fully focused on making something extraordinary. By paying your deposit, you're agreeing to the terms below. Questions about any of it? Just ask — we're always glad to talk it through before you commit.
The specifics of your commission — your name, project dates, the piece and its deliverables, pricing, and your 50/50 payment breakdown — appear on your order and invoice. The terms below are the standing terms that apply to every bespoke commission.
1. What "bespoke" means here
Every Daniel Yu piece is made to order. We work at three levels: Template / Made-to-Order (an existing design with limited changes such as metal or size), Design Adaptation (light customization of an existing design), and Bespoke Creation (an original piece designed from concept, for you). Bespoke Creation is reserved for commissions meeting our $10,000 minimum, which lets us give it the stones, time, and craftsmanship it deserves.
2. How we collaborate
Bespoke design is a guided creative partnership. You're commissioning Daniel Yu for a distinct artistic vision and technical expertise — your input on preferences and direction is genuinely welcomed and shapes the work, while the design execution remains the designer's authorship. In return, we ask that you stay engaged and make timely, committed decisions once a direction is set, so momentum — and the beauty of the piece — is never lost.
3. Deliverables & locking the design
Depending on the piece, your commission may move through a Digital Sketch phase (concept and artistic direction — expressive, not a technical blueprint) and a CAD Modeling phase (2D and 3D models for visualization and production; these look intentionally rigid and don't show final finishing).
Once you approve your sketch — or, if there's no sketch, your initial CAD — your design direction is locked and we begin building. After that point, requests that change the approved direction (reverting to earlier concepts, introducing new or conflicting references, or altering the fundamental structure, setting, or aesthetic) are considered a redesign, not a revision, and fall outside the original commission. A redesign may involve additional fees and a revised timeline. We lock the design not to limit you, but to protect the integrity of a piece we're proud to put our name on.
4. Revisions
Your commission includes one round of design revisions after the initial concept, to refine it toward your vision. Additional revisions can be accommodated at the designer's discretion, billed at $100/hour — and we'll always let you know before any additional time is billed.
5. Timely feedback
To keep your piece on schedule, we ask for your feedback within three business days of sharing an update. If responses take longer, your timeline shifts accordingly; extended delays may incur a $100/day holding fee or a pause, since your project slot and materials are reserved for you.
6. Artistic discretion
Final aesthetic decisions — proportion, stone placement, structural composition, and overall balance — rest with the designer, to preserve the integrity and quality of the finished piece.
7. Payment
Commissions are paid in two parts: a 50% non-refundable deposit to begin design and secure your materials, and the remaining 50% balance on completion, along with any approved additional fees. Your deposit reserves your project slot and holds your quoted pricing.
Balance payment is due within three days of completion; later payment incurs a $200/day late fee. Your finished piece and its ownership transfer to you only once payment is received in full, including sales tax.
Sales tax. California sales tax applies to all taxable purchases regardless of payment method (card, cash, Zelle, Venmo, wire, etc.) and is calculated at the time of payment. You're responsible for applicable sales tax.
8. If life happens (pause policy)
If you need to pause for personal or unforeseen reasons, your project can be held for up to one month with written notice. If it isn't resumed within that month, the commission is considered closed.
9. Ending a commission
Either of us may end the commission with written notice. If that happens, you're responsible for the work completed up to that point, and any unfinished concepts or designs remain ours and may not be used. We reserve the right to step away if ongoing indecision or misalignment makes it impossible to deliver work we can stand behind — and if we're the ones to end it, any unused portion of your deposit is refunded.
10. Privacy & showcasing your piece
We respect your privacy and handle personal information with discretion — we won't publish sensitive details like your full legal name (unless you approve it), addresses, contact information, or payment details, and any story we share is anonymized.
Sharing our work is how the studio grows, so once your piece is complete we may photograph, film, and share it — including full, identifiable images — as part of our portfolio and social media, without waiting for pickup or delivery. If your commission is private or time-sensitive — a surprise proposal, a gift, or simply a piece you'd rather keep unseen — just tell us in writing before completion and we'll hold or limit what we share. Unused concepts and designs remain the property of Daniel Yu Jewelry.
11. Gemstones
For quality control, warranty integrity, and liability, we work exclusively with designer-sourced gemstones — we're unable to set client-provided stones. Every stone we source is guaranteed authentic and of the quality represented at the time of selection and delivery. Once a finished piece is delivered, we're not liable for damage, loss, or wear resulting from normal use, impact, mishandling, or third-party work.
12. Craftsmanship guarantee, warranty & care
We stand fully behind our work. Every piece is covered against genuine manufacturing defects — faults in our craftsmanship or structural integrity — for the lifetime of the piece; if a covered defect appears through no misuse of your own, we'll repair or remake it at no charge. This accountability is always included, never an add-on. In every case, our responsibility is limited to repairing or remaking the piece, up to the value of your commission.
Everything beyond genuine defects — routine care, cleaning, resizing, and everyday-wear servicing — is offered through optional Care & Protection packages you can add at the time of your commission. We keep these separate so you pay only for the coverage you want, and so the price of your piece reflects the piece itself.
Not covered by the craftsmanship guarantee — instead handled through a Care package or billed as a service: normal wear and tear; resizing, including remakes needed when a client-provided measurement changes or no longer feels comfortable; finger-size changes over time; and any third-party repairs or alterations.
Loss, theft, and accidental damage fall outside both the craftsmanship guarantee and our Care packages — these are best protected by dedicated jewelry insurance. We've partnered with Brite + Co so you can insure your piece easily: app.brite.co/jeweler/danielyujewelry.
Sizing. If you're outside Los Angeles, please have your ring size professionally determined before production (a trusted ring sizer, or a local jeweler). We fabricate to the size you provide, so accuracy depends on that measurement — and any resize or remake arising from it is handled as a service or under a Care package, not the guarantee.
13. Your agreement
By paying your deposit, you confirm that you've read, understood, and agreed to these Bespoke Commission Terms.
These terms apply to bespoke commissions entered on or after July 20, 2026. If you began a commission with us under an earlier signed agreement, that agreement continues to govern your commission — these terms do not change or replace it.
