A piece that began with loss
The request came quietly, the way the most important ones often do. A daughter wanted something to keep her mother near — not a monument, but something she could wear every day, something that would feel like company rather than grief. Out of everything we might have made, one image kept returning: a swallow.
Why a swallow
For centuries, the swallow has meant return. It is the bird that travels impossibly far and always finds its way home. Sailors once wore it as a promise that they would come back to the people they loved. It felt exactly right here — a small, faithful thing that speaks of home, of coming back, of a bond that distance and even death cannot break.
Designing with care
We spent this commission differently than most. There is a particular responsibility in making something that will stand in for a person — that will be touched in quiet moments, held during hard days, and one day perhaps passed to someone else. Every curve of the wing, every proportion, was considered not just for beauty but for feeling: light enough to live with, strong enough to last, gentle enough to rest against the skin without ever asking to be noticed.
When it was finished, it was not a large piece. Meaning rarely needs to be. But it held everything it was asked to hold.
